"Wasted Days"

Utgave nr. 35 i "Live Vault" serien

John Hall.

Bruce Springsteen 72 år - and still going strong!

I saw rock and roll future and its name is Bruce Springsteen".

I

Springsteen har også blitt innlemmet i både "Songwriters Hall of Fame" og "Rock And Roll Hall of Fame" i 1999, "Kennedy Center Honors" i 2009, "MusiCares person of the year" i 2013 og ikke minst "The Presidential Medal of Freedom" i 2016.

From My Home to Yours #28 (15/9-21)

Les hele historien lenger nede i artikkelen.

Noen av artistene som ble spilt var Clarence Clemons & the Red Bank Rockers, The Killers, Vampire Weekend og James Brown. Bruce spilte "Easy Money" fra sin egen katalog, og det var hans låt «Savin’ up», som Clarence Clemons & the Red Bank Rockers fremførte.

"Easy Money"

Spillelisten:
Money Honey (Wanda Jackson)
Money On Straight (The Killers)
Mr. Dollar (Wynonie Harris)
Rich Man (Vampire Weekend)
Moneygrabber (Fitz And The Tantrums)
Money Won't Change You (James Brown & The Family)
Money (Barbara Lynn)
Money (Cardi B)
Easy Money (Bruce Springsteen)
I'm Your Bread Maker, Baby (Slim Harpo)
Dead Presidents (Little Walter)
Broke (Teddy Swims)
Money Back Guarantee (Max Falcon)
Brother Can You Spare A Dime (Bing Crosby)
Savin' Up (Clarence Clemons & The Red Rockers)

Springsteens ord under sendingen:
Hello gamblers, ramblers, friends, family, hustlers and rustlers, welcome to Volume 28 of "From My Home to Yours", titled "Money Honey".
That was The Killers with "Money on Straight". And we opened with Wanda Jackson and "Money Honey". Wanda Jackson is, of course, the First Lady of Rockabilly, singing the song that was originally recorded and released in 1953, by Clyde McPhatter and the newly formed Drifters. She cut it on an EP called Let's Have a Party in 1958. Patti and I were lucky enough to see Wanda and meet Wanda at the Asbury Lanes, some years ago, and she had every bit of what she's always had, that premier female voice of rockabilly. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. She is a native Oklahoman. She retired from performance in 2019, and she will be missed. She was as wonderfully down home and sassy as that voice always made her sound. Wanda, wherever you are tonight, we love you. Wynonie Harris, sing us a little "Mr. Dollar"!

Wynonie Harris was known for his blues-shoutin' voice, ribald lyrics and his rhythm and blues songs with titles such as "Lolly Pop Mama", "I Like My Baby's Pudding", "Sittin' on It All the Time", "Keep on Churnin' (Till the Butter Comes)" and "Wasn't That Good". Yes it was, Wynonie, yes it was. Now here's Vampire Weekend with "Rich Man".
Short story in the beginning of this song: As a child, I took lessons at Mike Diehl's music school on South Street. Mr. Diehl had a lovely little school. Nothing too big. Came out of a small '50s-style ranch house, and made a nice living there. Some years later come, Donald Trump is building one of his damn casinos down Atlantic City. Orders a bunch of pianos from my friend Mr. Diehl. And of course, refuses to pay for them. Now, for Mr. Diehl, hundreds of thousands of dollars in pianos is a lot of fucking pianos, and a lot of fucking money. And that this bastard held out on this smalltown music school owner, and finally agreed to pay him something like six on the dollar, was disgusting. And it really hurt Mr. Diehl at the time, and that was basically his, that was the money that he made for the entire year. So I'm gonna dedicate this one to that fucker that's sitting down in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, right now, sucking on his shrimp scampi and lyin' to the rest of the nation. He's just a goddamn money grabber.

That was Barbara Lynn, with the classic song that says it all. "Money (That's What I Want)", written by Berry Gordy, Janie Bradford, it was Motown's first hit record, in June of 1960. It was performed by Barrett Strong. Now Barrett claims he wrote the song with Berry and Janie and his name was there, but it was removed from the copyright three years after it was written. Strange. And then it was restored in 1987, when the copyright was renewed. And then it was excised again, the following year, in a dispute. Classic music business, unfortunately, that I guarantee came down to nothing but money. Cardi B, explain this to us.

That was yours truly, on "Easy Money", the first song I wrote for Wrecking Ball. Drivin' home from a bar in Red Bank, I started singin' the chorus. "Take out the dog, I'll take out the cat", you know? Behind the wheel, just started hummin' that along. Suddenly I said, "I got it!" I dashed in my wheels to my studio, called my crew and threw down a rough version of that tune. And I wrote the rest of it that night on the edge of my bed, and I recorded it the next day. I like it when they happen like that. It was my diatribe against all them Wall Street suckers, grabbin' all that easy money after that 2008 crash, without giving a fuck about what happened to everybody else.

And before that, the one and only Cardi B. Now here's Slim Harpo with "I'm Your Bread Maker, Baby".
That's one of my favorite bluesmen, Slim Harpo. "I'm Talkin'", "I'm a king bee, buzzin' around your hive". I'm talkin', "Rainin' in my heart". I'm talkin', "Got love if you want it"", got love if you want it". I'm talkin', (sings), "Come here baby, scratch my back". All Slim Harpo. Bad ass. Great, great groove. Born in Lobdell, Louisiana, influenced by Jimmy Reed, my other favorite bluesman. Slim had a swamp groove, made him a favorite of all the '60s blues-rock British combos such as The Rolling Stones, who did a nice cover of "King Bee". As did The Castiles, back in 1966. Now "Baby Scratch My Back", of course, that was a huge hit, reaching Number. 1 in the R&B charts and making all the way to No. 16 in the pop charts. "Oh yeah, baby, scratch my back".
And following Slim was Little Walter, the blues harp genius, with "Dead Presidents".

Broke? Hell, everybody remembers being broke. I once drove to New York City in the early '70s in hopes of getting $30 to keep me from getting thrown out of my apartment in Asbury Park. It was too late, but I was going to get this $30 from Mike Appel, my then-manager. When I got to the Lincoln Tunnel, the kind lady wouldn't let me through, because after she busted open my last roll of 100 pennies, the last money I had on the planet, she found one Canadian penny! And 99 cents, my friend, will not get you into New York City! In the day, you needed a full dollar or you're turnin' around! And that's exactly what she told me to do! "Turn this car around, sir, you don't have a dollar". So I got out of that car with a cacophony of horns blarin' behind me, for the bullshit that was going on where I was, and I searched that car inside and out, I took my time till I found, somewhere ‘neath the back seat, one American cent. And I took it between my thumb and my finger, and I dropped it into her hand, and she slapped it down on that metal desk. New York was mine! I had the dollar. But damn, that was broke.

That was Max Falcon, who needs that money back guarantee to feel secure. And this is, this is a gorgeous recording of "Buddy, Can You Spare a Dime?" by one of the great, great American voices, Bing Crosby. Please Enjoy.

That's our show for today, folks. Till we meet again, I wish you health, wealth, good fortune and good times. Go in peace.

Terrorangrepet i USA - 20 år siden i dag
Bruce Springsteen fremførte i dag låten "I'll See You In My Dreams", under 20 års-minnemarkeringen av terrorangrepet på USA den 11. september 2001. Markeringen fant sted på World Trade Center Memorial Plaza i New York.

Bruce Springsteen, NY 11/9-21

World Trade Center) i New York.

The Rising (9/11 remix)

I går kveld avsluttet Bruce Springsteen årets runde av "Springsteen On Broadway".

Growin' Up / My Hometown / My Father's House / The Wish / Thunder Road / The Promised Land / Born In The U.S.A. / Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out / Tougher Than The Rest (med Patti Scialfa) / Fire (med Patti Scialfa) / American Skin (41 Shots) / The Rising / Dancing In The Dark / Land Of Hope And Dreams / iI'll see you in my dreams

Live Vaults, The Live Archives" (nr. 71)
Mai i 2005.

"Devils And Dust" ble sluppet 26/4-05

"Wreck On The Highway"

Konsertopptaket fra Philadelphia inneholder 24 låter.
"Darkness On The Edge Of Town” outtake låten “Iceman” hadde sin premiere under konserten og ble kun spilt denne ene gangen under turneen.

In the opening weeks of his Devils & Dust solo tour, Springsteen returns to the Tower Theater outside Philadelphia, site of legendary E Street Band shows in the 1970s. Accompanying himself on pump organ, traditional and electric piano, as well as acoustic guitar, Springsteen performs a virtuosic set featuring nine tracks from D&D, complemented by "My Beautiful Reward," "Empty Sky," "Incident On 57th Street," "Part Man, Part Monkey," "Wreck On The Highway," "Real World," "Further On (Up The Road)," the first tour appearance of "Ramrod" and the world premiere of the haunting Darkness outtake, "The Iceman."

Låtene som er på utgivelsen:
My Beautiful Reward / Reason To Believe / Devils & Dust / Youngstown / Empty Sky / Black Cowboys / Iceman / Incident On 57th Street / Part Man, Part Monkey / Maria's Bed / Silver Palomino / Reno / Wreck On The Highway / Real World / The Rising / Further On (Up The Road) / Jesus Was An Only Son / Leah / The Hitter / Matamoros Banks / Ramrod / Land Of Hope And Dreams / The Promised Land / Dream Baby Dream

From My Home to Yours #27 (1/9-21)
Bruce Springsteens 27. utgave av "From My Home To Yours", som sendes på SiriusXM satelitt radio, har fått tittelen "Going to the Chapel".

"Going to the Chapel" var den 27. rekken.

Sendingen varte i litt over en time.

"I Wanna Marry You"

Artister som ble fremført under sendingen, var blant annet Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, The Dixie Cups, Sam & Dave, The Roches og Springsteen selv med live versjonen av "I Wanna Marry You".

Spillelisten:
01. You Never Can Tell (Chuck Berry)
02. Gonna Get Married (Major Lance)
03. I'm Gonna Get Married (Lloyd Price)
04. Chapel Of Love (The Dixie Cups)
05. I Wanna Marry You (Live, 27/1-16 New York)
06. Mexican Divorce (The Drifters)
07. I Threw It All Away (Bob Dylan)
08. The Married Men (The Roches)
09. D-I-V-O-R-C-E (Tammy Wynette)
10. On The Other Hand (Randy Travis)
11. Customary Thing (John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band)
12. I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock 'N' Roll) (Dave Edmunds)

14. When Something Is Wrong With My Baby (Sam & Dave)
15. Life's Little Ups And Downs (Charlie Rich)
16. Can't Help Falling In Love (Elvis Presley)

Springsteens ord under sendingen:
Hello, lovers, brothers, sisters, newlyweds, divorcees from sea to shining sea. Welcome to Vol. 27 of "From My Home to Yours", titled "Going to the Chapel".

They had a HiFi phono. Boy, did they let it blast. Seven hundred little records. All rock, rhythm and jazz/But when the sun went down. The rapid tempo of the music fell, "C'est la vie", "Such is life", "Say the old folks. It goes to show you never can tell". Our master American storyteller, our Mark Twain of rock 'n' roll, the genius of Chuck Berry with "You Never Can Tell". And this is Major Lance.

"Gonna Get Married". That was Major Lance, out of Winterville, Mississippi. A Northern Soul pioneer, father of Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms. He was one of 12 children, he attended Wells High School along with Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler, what a class!, in Chicago. "Monkey Time". "Hey Little Girl". "Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um". All written by Curtis Mayfield and bearing a singular sound and rhythm that was a signature of Mayfield's music. What a great groove on those records. This is Lloyd Price, with "I'm Gonna Get Married".

The Dixie Cups, with one of the most classic wedding songs of all time, "Chapel of Love". Written by Jeff Barry, Ellie Greenwich and Phil Spector. Originally recorded by Darlene Love but turned into a hit that spent three weeks at No. 1 by The Dixie Cups in 1964, knocking The Beatles out of the top chart spot. And that wasn't easy to do. Coming Up, "I Wanna Marry You", live from The River Tour.

That was "I Wanna Marry You", written for The River in a Ben E. King via Manfred Mann's Paul Jones vocal style, borrowing a little soul, mixing it with a little doo wop, and sequenced on the album just before "The River". It was meant to rub against "The River" and highlight the contradictions of the two songs, and of marriage itself. One, a utopian dream. And one, social realism. They created a tension and a conflict that was at the center of The River album, really the first album where I wrote about relationships between men and women. This is The Drifters, with "Mexican Divorce".

That was Bob Dylan, with "I Threw It All Away". And oh yes, we have, a few times. From the lovely album, Nashville Skyline. One of the most playable albums in Bob's stable of incredible records. Here come The Roches, with a great, great song, one of my favorites, "The Married Men".

And that, "The Married Men", is one of a kind. There is no other song dealing with the ins and outs, complications of marriage, anything like that one. Great song, I believe written by Maggie Roche, if I am correct. I'm not sure about that. But they were incredible songwriters and an amazing vocal group. Really the kind of vocals that can only come from blood. The Beach Boys have it also, of course. The Everly Brothers had it also, of course. It's just a unique feature of genetics, the way those voices blend. And now, Tammy Wynette singing about something she knows a little something about. "D-I-V-O-R-C-E".

And that was the fabulous "On the Other Hand", by Randy Travis. Singer of 16 No. 1 singles on the Billboard country charts. He was born in Marshville, North Carolina, had a bit of a troubled youth, bad adulthood, but generally mended his ways and dedicated himself to his music and is just one of the loveliest voices of a certain part of country that was sort of… somewhat post-traditional and yet certain pre- the modern country that we hear today. And "On the Other Hand", what a great song. What a great, great song. Here's my friends John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, with a Buddy Holly-ish cut called "The Customary Thing".

That was John Cafferty. Now here comes "I Knew The Bride". C'mon, Dave!

That was Dave Edmunds, of course, with "I Knew The Bride (When She Used To Rock 'n' Roll)".

That is classic Tammy Wynette. Women, "Stand By Your Man", and men, stand by your woman.

Yes, that was Sam & Dave, back in the days when they were speaking to one another, with "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby (Something Is Wrong With Me)". I've seen them perform that, live in Philadelphia. Also at the Satellite Lounge in Fort Dix, New Jersey. And at The Fastlane, that's right, The Fastlane in Asbury Park. I saw Sam & Dave three times while they were still playing together. And, literally, every time, they brought me to tears. And certainly with this song. They were just one of the most powerful, incredible duos of all time. And when I saw them at The Fastlane, it was heartbreaking, because it was a relatively small crowd there, and they simply sang their hearts out. And I can tell you, I stood in the back of the room and wept at seeing this great, great, great talent, later in the day of their performing together, bringing in, really, quite a small audience, and it was just so undeserved, and they were so epic and so profound that it touched me incredibly deeply. And that about says it all. Almost. Here's Charlie Rich, with "Life's Little Ups and Downs".

And that's about our show for today. I want you to stay hard, stay hungry, stay alive, and stay in love. Go in peace.
